Despite starting out in road cycling (he was champion of the Vuelta a Castellón in 2012 and 2013 and was runner-up in the 2012 Vuelta a Cantabria), Josep has been acclaimed in the most extreme MTB challenges.
In addition to winning four consecutive Titan Desert, from 2016 to 2019, he is also the only rider to have won the Ruta de los Conquistadores in Costa Rica three times in a row, in 2017, 2018 and 2019. In 2020, he completed the 300-kilometre, 9,000-metre route solo, without stopping, in just over 17 hours and in adverse weather conditions.
Betalú is a true idol, especially in Costa Rica, where he has a legion of followers. On some occasions he has declared that he practically feels "tico" because of the warmth offered by the fans there.
